I know. Who has? But if you can find it I really recommend watching this video (brought to my attention by Peter Suber on the SPARC Open Data list – thank you!). It’s a very interesting presentation by Hans Rosling where he de-bunks a few myths about the developing world. Rosling is professor of international health at Sweden’s world-renowned Karolinska Institute. He is also the founder of Gapminder, a non-profit that brings vital global data to life. In the first 15 minutes he provides a fascinating overview of the changes that have occurred in the world over the last 40 years in terms of child survival rates, average number of children per woman, life expectancy at birth, distribution of income, GDP per capita. The graphics he employs to make this understandable and engaging are wonderful. In the last 5 minutes he turns to the issue of the availability and usability of data (digital curation bells!!) Rosling poses the question “why are we not using the data we have?” and answers: “The data is hidden down in the databases. And the public is there, and the Internet is there but we have still not used it effectively. All that information we saw changing in the world [in the demonstration] does not include publicly funded statistics. There are some web pages like this …but people put prices on them, stupid passwords and boring statistics. And this won’t work!” He then asks, what is needed? His answer - linking data to design. That’s where Gapminder comes in. The website describes its purpose as: “… filling a gap. There has been a market failure in distributing global data. A lot of people are interested in the data, but don’t get access to it (and if they manage to access the data, they need to be advanced skilled statisticians to analyze it). Gapminder wants to make data more accessible and easier to use for instant visual analysis. We believe decision makers, politicians as well as education at almost all levels lack adequate tools.”The software is proving popular with many. Ben Hyde has blogged:These gapminder charts are just marvelous. They are a exemplar of what we should expect from data presentation going forward. Printed datalink

Years after his mother dies during childbirth, young Ben (Sterling Beaumon) and his embittered, alcoholic father Roger (Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Gries in one of many bad wigs on display this week) arrive on the island to work for DHARMA, finding it far more hospitable than the castaways would years later. As Ben comes of age on the island, he’s haunted by ghostly visions of the mother he never met (Carrie Preston aka Michael Emerson’s spouse) while coming to resent his father, who commits the unforgivable sin of continuously forgetting his son’s birthday. As Ben reflects on a betrayal from his past he secretly plots another. With great reservation and under protest, Ben agrees to take Locke (having provided the corpse of his father as proof of his commitment to the island) to see Jacob, the highly-secretive leader of “the Others” The encounter between Jacob and Locke begins somewhat anticlimactically, with Ben introducing Locke to an empty chair and claiming emphatically that Jacob is sitting before them, going so far as pantomiming a one-sided conversation where he introduces the two of them. Locke quickly goes from skeptical to irate, berating Ben as a fraud whom he intends to expose, lashing out less at Ben’s rouse and more at his own foolishness at believing any one person could possibly explain the unexplainable phenomenon of the island. If Hurley (Jorge Garcia) has often stood in as an audience surrogate for skeptics then Locke (Terry O’Quinn) is the voice of the show’s true-believers, long clinging to the hope that all of the show’s divergent threads will somehow come together in an elaborate tapestry. For all the supposed communicating Ben does with Jacob, he never heard the plea for help that Locke did, which calls into question both Ben’s sanity and his standing with the island “Gods.” We learned last week that Ben intended to humiliate Locke to keep him in his place and this week found “the Others” In killing Locke, Ben guarantees his role as Alpha male and spiritual leader to “the Others” While obvious in hindsight, I must confess to being only slightly less surprised than Locke that he ended up with a bullet in the belly, dying in a mass grave (filled with the skeletal remains of the DHARMA Initiative members) with Ben standing over him gun in hand.If Reservoir Dogs has taught us anything it’s that, painful as it might be, it takes a very long time to succumb to a gun shot wound. I had harbored the hope that Locke would grow into a position of prominence with “the Others”, placing him at odds with his former friends, playing up the inherent Lord of the Flies echo in the show, but, alas, that will likely never come to fruition. If there’s a fundamental flaw to last night’s flashbacks it’s the decision to focus almost exclusively on Ben’s childhood years, leading up to his seduction by “the Others”, only to build towards an ellipse encompassing almost twenty years. That the actor Michael Emerson is a full twelve years older than Carbonell has lead some fans to speculate that Alpert is everything from a clone to a robot to an immortal subject of the island’s anti-aging properties, an unfortunate bit of confusion that probably could have been avoided simply by creating a new character for young Ben to interact with.To mine eyes the interesting story here is in Ben’s gradual indoctrination and manipulation at the hands of the Others and not how little Ben laid in wait to have his revenge.

The chart below shows the payoff of the Citi FORWARD sale of equity to ADIA, dividend enhanced with an embedded options spread. Subprime CDOs also paid a high yield but most buyers didn’t realise or were not informed(!) about the credit default options they were SHORT SELLING, much too cheaply. The structure looks like Citi purchased the right to put stock to ADIA at 31.83 and sold a 17% out-of-the money call so ADIA would participate in any upside above 37.24. Since large bank equity puts are massively bid by those seeking protection and therefore implied volatility is high, ADIA picks up plenty of skew by writing the at-the-money put and buying a higher strike call so was obviously owed SUBSTANTIAL premium on the collar. So the shocking 11% coupon is explained as compensation for ADIA forgoing the 7% dividend yield available from Citi common, the high embedded option spread that Citi bought from ADIA, the typical equity premium on a mandatory CB and the tax treatment. Citi probably minimized its cost of equity capital in a difficult situation while ADIA got what MIGHT eventually be cheap equity in a bank that is almost certainly considered by the US authorities to be too big to fail. Abu Dhabi has written a put at a level they would presumably be content to own the stock and get paid a dividend plus the embedded option premium until they take formal ownership of the stock in 3 years or so. Panic is high, vol is high, vol skew is high, the current dividend yield seems high; We may yet see futher equity financings emerge for Citigroup and other banks with the credit crisis and other problems still around though Citi will be glad to have got an initial .5 billion done with a stable investor who won’t short sell the common as a hedge. Less negative effect on the stock price is a reason mandatory CBs are preferable for the issuer than ordinary CBs.With some financial engineering and restructuring of cashflows the 11% coupon could probably have been as extreme as 0% or 20% by changing various preferential rights, the capital structure, optionality, convert strikes or other aspects of the deal.

But in terms of the bigger picture, Terriers head coach Dennis Wolff couldn’t have been more disappointed after the team dropped their sixth consecutive contest. The Terriers turned the ball over five times in the first five minutes of the game and did not score until sophomore John Holland’s layup with 12:31 left in the first half. The run closed the gap the Jaspers lead to two, but sophomore Antoine Pearson snuck by the Terriers defense and scored in transition to put the Jaspers up 30-26 going into halftime.“I thought Corey [Lowe] and Carlos [Strong] continued to try to make plays until the end of the game,” A scoring drought to begin the second half put the Terriers in desperate mode right out of the locker room. The Jaspers also were able to grab 11 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Terriers 41-36.“We don’t show enough fight defensively, we don’t rebound when we need to rebound,” “Contrary to what the stats look like, our lack of any play in or around the basket is a large part of where we are at right now.”The Terriers look to get back on track on Tuesday December 4 when they take on the Harvard Crimson at Case Gymnasium.

Original PostChinese VersionThe live style decide the brain situation, this is my opinion all the while. Did you know that you have one hundred billion nerve cells in your brain, and every nerve cell has many connections to other nerve cells? It’s simple, your brain is at the center of everything you do, all you feel and think, and every nuance of how you relate to people. Run Up Your Brain Cells Research suggests that people who get plenty of physical exercise can wind up with better brains. Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., found that adult mice who ran on an exercise wheel whenever they felt like it gained twice as many new cells in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in learning and memory, than mice who sat around all day discussing Lord of the Rings in Internet chat rooms. brains reacted the way they did, but it’s possible that the voluntary nature of the exercise made it less stressful and therefore more beneficial. Exercise Your Mind It isn’t just physical exercise that gets those brain cells jumping. Just like those head-pumped cabbies and piano jockeys, you can build up various areas of your brain by putting them to work. Katz, Ph.D., co-author of Keep Your Brain Alive, says that finding simple ways to use aspects of your brain that may be lagging could help maintain both nerve cells and dendrites, branches on the cells that receive and process information. Just as a new weightlifting exercise builds up underused muscles, Katz says that novel ways of thinking and viewing the world can improve the functioning of inactive sections of the brain. Your brain will be happier and you will be amazed at how many opportunities and solutions will show up in your life and work. They also seem to improve the function of the membranes that surround brain cells, which may be why people who consume a lot of fish are less likely to suffer depression, dementia, even attention-deficit disorder. Your brain is a memory machine, so give it a chance to work! While you may never be called upon to navigate a little maze in search of a cheddar cube, these results could hold true for you as well, for two reasons: Fat can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain, and it may also slow down the metabolism of glucose, the form of sugar the brain utilizes as food. Doing puzzles in your free time is a great way to activate your brain and keep it in good working condition. Last year, Rauscher reported that, for rats at least, a Mozart piano sonata seems to stimulate activity in three genes involved in nerve-cell signalling in the brain. What’s more, even its proponents tend to think that music boosts brain power simply because it makes listeners feel better - relaxed and stimulated at the same time - and that a comparable stimulus might do just as well. Common activities such as gardening, sewing, playing bridge, reading, painting, and doing crossword puzzles have value, but push yourself to do different gardening techniques, more complex sewing patterns, play bridge against more talented players to increase your skill, read new authors on varied subjects, learn a new painting technique, and work harder crossword puzzles. Pushing your brain to new heights help to keep it healthy. brains, but kept them from repairing themselves later on - in human terms, that means you shouldn’t expect to pass the Mensa entrance exam any time soon. It gives your brain a chance to think strategically, and keeps it working. Brain imaging studies at UCLA have shown that decreased estrogen levels are associated with overall decreased brain activity and poor memory. Enhancing estrogen levels for women through regular sexual activity enhances overall brain activity and improves memory. I continue to find that my brain is greatly stimulated by writing to be read. Try Aroma Therapy To Activate Your Brain One day, as I was falling asleep, while listening to endless speeches at a conference, my brain suddenly perked up when I caught a whiff of lemon from someone’s cologne. Whether it’s doing logic puzzles, memorizing lines from Shakespeare, or learning a new skill, keep your brain busy, if you don’t want it to rust away like a car in a junkyard.

Market 28 is directly across the street from where we both have our digs. Their must be at least a hundred stores selling T-shirts etc to the tourists. Bus loads of people come in all day long. It’s getting to be a real important Tourist attraction for Cancun. Now in all these stores you will find young Mexican girls working, they are 18 and up and come to this land of opportunity from all parts of Mexico. What could be better for Jack, Alton and Dominick. Our hit rate is excellent in the Market.Even better that sitting in front of the Italian Joint on the main drag. Finally, Alton and I ran across two girls working in a T-shirt shop that were really beautiful. Rarely do we find two great looking ones in the same place. I have to say that their boss has good taste in hiring. Alton of course, can’t speak Spanish so I did my thing. Angel was 21 from Tabasco and Martita 22 from Mexico City, Angel was to meet him at 6PM after work in front of OXXO. She made it a point to say, make sure your on time. Well, she was there at 6PM sharp. We still can’t believe that she showed up………..she’s TOO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! Oxxo is across from Alton’s pad so he talked her into coming up to his place for a drink. Alton called me later on that night and said it would take a few dates to nail her. As he puts it,( A 78 year old guy with a 21 year old girl) they mugged it up for a while and when he put his hand on her breast she came out with. DONT TOUCH MY LUNGS”. He gave her is ususal massage treatment and they made plans to meet Sunday to go to the beach. This is truly a “work in progress” worth working on. Im having Martita over for one of my Pasta Dinners next Monday night after Mariana leaves. Details to follow next week.

(Lesson 40)Evangelization and Ministries“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” Matt 20:28Discussion Guide:Each member of the Church is called upon to spread the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Jesus told his disciples, You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven

Array TST lah!Insya-Allah, kalu semuanya berjalan lancar, selain suka-suka, have fun, togather-gather, hope the organizer (panitia Pantai Timur) will slot in something like kerohanian lah, tak payah la yang berat-berat, just a simple and light tazkirah or renungan (something to ponder) sesuai dengan tujuan, maksud dan matlamat - mengeratkan silaturahim dan menambahkan ’saudara’ sealumni.Dan juga tak perlu lah kita duduk di hotel-hotel yang terlalu mewah sangat…
